Networking

Networking isn’t just about collecting business cards or even connecting on LinkedIn (as much as I value the platform!) It’s about building real rapport.

One of the most important aspects of networking is the work that takes place BEFORE you go to an event or meet someone.

Research is key … before meeting new people, especially elected officials. Dive into their profiles on governmental web pages, LinkedIn, and even Facebook, searching for common ground. The goal isn’t to ask specific questions but to find something that genuinely resonates—a shared interest, a similar experience, or a common goal.

This approach transforms interactions from mere formalities into meaningful engagements. It reminds us that networking is about forming authentic connections that can lead to lasting relationships … and ultimately business transactions.

Introverts, who often excel at research, can be particularly effective networkers. By coming prepared to an event with knowledge of whom they want to connect with and what common ground they may share, they can engage more confidently and meaningfully, perhaps even better than extraverts!

As Susan Cain, author of “Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking,” puts it, “There’s zero correlation between being the best talker and having the best ideas.”

As we navigate our professional journeys, let’s remember to look beyond the surface. Do the research, find the connection, and build the rapport.

Genuine relationships are the cornerstone of successful networking and networking is one of the foundational underpinnings of successful entrepreneurship.
